Why I Start Every French Rail Search on SNCF Connect

Why I Start Every French Rail Search on SNCF Connect

When I plan a French rail trip, I want every option on one screen. So I start with SNCF Connect, because a single search shows TGV INOUI, OUIGO, Intercités and TER trains side by side.

For this guide, I also read SNCF Connect’s help pages, fare conditions and railcard terms in full. Then I checked journey times from London, Brussels, Geneva and Frankfurt on its route pages. As a result, every rule and price below comes from the official page, along with the date I checked it.

I also compared that with the advice you’ll often find elsewhere. However, booking windows, refund rules and railcard conditions are easy to mix up. So whenever other advice differed from SNCF Connect, I followed SNCF Connect.

Once you know how to book, our guide to planning a France trip by train helps you choose your route, budget and bases.

How to Book French Trains on SNCF Connect, Step by Step

  1. Search your route. First, enter your departure station, destination, date and passengers on the website or app.
  2. Compare the train types. Next, check whether each result is TGV INOUI, OUIGO, Intercités or TER, because the rules differ.
  3. Check the station. For example, Paris to Lyon trains leave from Paris Gare de Lyon, Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy or Paris Bercy.
  4. Add your railcard. If you hold a Carte Avantage, add it before you pay, so that the discount applies.
  5. Pay. After that, pay with a major card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, while PayPal works on orders from €30.
  6. Save your ticket. Finally, keep it on your phone, or choose a printable e-ticket instead.

Sunset Weekly tip: if your train isn’t on sale yet, set a booking alert instead. SNCF Connect then emails you when tickets go on sale, and you don’t even need an account.

TGV INOUI: Speed and Flexibility

TGV INOUI: Speed and Flexibility

First, SNCF Connect describes TGV INOUI as top-of-the-range high-speed travel, reaching up to 320 km/h between Paris and Lyon. Also, SNCF Connect lists free Wi-Fi and a buffet car. Best of all, most tickets can be changed or cancelled free until seven days before departure. After that, however, the fee is €19 per person, per journey.

OUIGO: The Lowest High-Speed Fares

OUIGO: The Lowest High-Speed Fares

By contrast, OUIGO is a low-cost high-speed service. For example, on 14 October 2026, the cheapest Paris to Lyon fare on SNCF Connect was an OUIGO ticket at €16. However, tickets can’t be cancelled or refunded. Instead, you can change them for €19 per person, per journey, up to 30 minutes before departure.

Also, check your station carefully. For example, some OUIGO trains to Lyon leave from Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy rather than Paris Gare de Lyon.

Intercités: Classic Routes and Night Trains

Intercités: Classic Routes and Night Trains

Intercités trains run on classic lines at up to 200 km/h, serving more than 200 destinations in France. In addition, reservations are mandatory on lines such as Paris–Clermont-Ferrand and Paris–Limoges–Toulouse, whereas Nantes–Bordeaux and Nantes–Lyon don’t need one.

Better still, Intercités de Nuit night trains leave Paris Austerlitz for Briançon, Nice, Toulouse, Lourdes and the Latour-de-Carol–Perpignan–Cerbère line, with the Lourdes line extended to Hendaye in summer. On board, you can then choose a couchette or a cheaper seat.

TER: Regional Trains and Day Trips

TER: Regional Trains and Day Trips

Meanwhile, TER trains cover regional routes. Moreover, a ticket is valid on TER trains and buses for your chosen date and route, unless your fare says otherwise. Plus, in many regions, including Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Occitanie, TER tickets are refundable without fees until the day before, unless your fare says otherwise.

As a result, TER is ideal for day trips. For instance, Strasbourg to Colmar takes just 26 minutes, with 42 trains a day.

Is the Carte Avantage Worth It for Visitors?

First of all, every version of the Carte Avantage discount card costs €49 for a year. However, the conditions depend on your age.

CardAges30% off TGV INOUI and Intercités
Carte Avantage Jeune12 to 27Every day of the year
Carte Avantage Adulte27 to 59Under the card terms, weekend one-way trips, returns including a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night, or travel with a child
Carte Avantage Senior60 and overEvery day of the year

Source: SNCF Connect card pages, checked 14 October 2026.

On top of that, all three cards add:

  • Price caps: for example, in second class, direct TGV INOUI and Intercités journeys in France are capped at €49 under 1h30, €69 from 1h30 to 3h, and €89 over 3h.
  • Family savings: also, children aged 4 to 11 get 60% off, for up to three children booked with the cardholder.
  • Regional discounts: similarly, TER fares are 25%, 30% or 50% cheaper, depending on the region.

Note, though, that OUIGO isn’t included. Also, SNCF Connect says the price caps “currently remain in effect”, so check them before you buy.

The Break-Even Maths

At 30% off, you need about €163 of eligible fares before the €49 card pays for itself. Therefore, add up the full fares you plan to book first.

Your planOur verdict
One short TGV INOUI journeyProbably not worth it
Two or more long TGV INOUI journeysWorth checking, since the fares add up quickly
Mostly OUIGONot worth it, because OUIGO is excluded
Aged 27 to 59, travelling alone on weekdaysCheck the Adulte conditions first
Aged under 28 or over 59More flexible, as the discount applies every day
Travelling with childrenWorth checking, thanks to 60% off for children

Sunset Weekly tip: the card terms on SNCF Connect set age limits, but they don’t mention a residency requirement. Even so, read the full conditions before you buy.

The Most Common SNCF Connect Mistakes

  1. Missing your OUIGO station. For example, some Paris to Lyon OUIGO trains use Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy.
  2. Arriving late for OUIGO. OUIGO asks you to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and then access closes 5 minutes before.
  3. Expecting an OUIGO refund. Unfortunately, OUIGO tickets can’t be cancelled, although you can change them for €19.
  4. Leaving TGV INOUI changes too late. Most changes are free until seven days before, but they cost €19 after that.
  5. Assuming every Intercités train is flexible. In fact, some lines require a reservation.
  6. Buying the Adulte card when you travel solo on weekdays. After all, its 30% discount depends on weekend or family travel.
  7. Forgetting luggage limits. On TGV INOUI, an excess or non-compliant bag can cost €50, so label every bag.
