Sunset Weekly News · Travel News · World Cup 2026 Immigration Intelligence Published: May 2026 · 5-minute read · URGENT: Tournament opens 11 June 2026
The 2026 FIFA World Cup opens at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, on 11 June 2026 and runs to the Final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on 19 July 2026. For the first time in World Cup history, three sovereign nations are co-hosting — the United States, Mexico, and Canada — across 16 cities and 104 matches. Consequently, for UK fans, that means navigating three completely separate immigration systems with three separate entry documents. Getting any one of them wrong means denial at the boarding gate before you leave the UK.
This is the definitive entry requirements update for UK passport holders. Specifically, every figure, every URL, and every deadline below is sourced from official government sources — US Department of State, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM).
The One-Line Summary for UK Passport Holders
The United Kingdom is part of the US Visa Waiver Programme — consequently, the vast majority of British fans will simply apply for ESTA online and will not need a visa appointment at all. For Canada, visitors from visa-exempt countries flying into Canada need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — this is separate from the US ESTA, and even if you already have an approved ESTA, you still need a Canadian eTA for flights into Toronto or Vancouver. For Mexico, UK passport holders enter visa-free for up to 180 days and receive an FMM tourist card on arrival.
In short: three countries, three documents, zero special World Cup visas. Specifically, Canadian immigration authorities have clarified that there will be no special or event-specific visa introduced for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The same applies to the US and Mexico. Standard immigration rules govern the entire tournament.
Country 1: United States — ESTA Required
Essential Facts: UK passport holders enter the US under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). An approved ESTA — Electronic System for Travel Authorization — is required before boarding any flight to the US. ESTA is not a visa. It is a pre-travel electronic check that authorises you to travel. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov only. Cost: US$40.27 (increased from US$21 effective 30 September 2025 — confirmed from esta.cbp.dhs.gov). Valid for two years or until your passport expires. Apply now — do not wait.
What UK Fans Need
Foreign visitors from any of the 42 countries who participate in the Visa Waiver Program can apply using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Notably, the United Kingdom is one of those 42 countries. Therefore, UK passport holders do not need a B1/B2 visitor visa for the US.
The ESTA application is completed entirely online at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the only official US government ESTA portal. Importantly, third-party sites charging significantly more are not official. The fee is US$40.27 (increased effective 30 September 2025). Approval is typically instant but can take up to 72 hours. Once approved, an ESTA is valid for two years or until your passport expires — whichever comes first — and covers multiple trips to the US during that period.
What ESTA Does Not Cover
An ESTA authorises travel to the US under the VWP for tourism purposes for up to 90 days per visit. It does not permit working in the US. Consequently, World Cup visitors should approach US entry on the basis that tourism means tourism. If work commitments cannot be paused for the duration of the trip, seek professional advice well in advance to assess whether a different immigration route fits your situation.
What Is FIFA PASS — and Do UK Fans Need It?
The FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System (PASS) gives those who purchase FIFA World Cup 2026 tickets directly from FIFA and who opt in to FIFA PASS the chance to interview for a B1/B2 visitor visa before the tournament begins. Specifically, FIFA PASS is primarily intended for fans from countries that are not part of the VWP. Almost certainly not — because the United Kingdom is part of the US Visa Waiver Programme, the vast majority of British fans will simply apply for ESTA and will not need a visa appointment at all. Therefore, you do not need FIFA PASS if you are eligible for ESTA.
US Host Cities — 11 Cities Confirmed
The hosting duties for the 2026 edition of the World Cup will be shared between Mexico, Canada and 11 cities in the United States, where the bulk of the action will take place — including all of the quarterfinals, semifinals and the Final.
In total, the 11 US host cities are: New York/New Jersey (MetLife Stadium — hosting the Final), Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium), Dallas (AT&T Stadium), San Francisco/Bay Area (Levi’s Stadium), Miami (Hard Rock Stadium), Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Seattle (Lumen Field), Houston (NRG Stadium), Kansas City (Arrowhead Stadium), Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field), and Boston (Gillette Stadium).
Fly from the UK to US host cities:British Airways serves nine US host city airports direct from London, including New York/JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. United Airlines operates direct London Heathrow services to New York/Newark, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston — plus the most comprehensive domestic network for connecting between US host cities. For connections via European hubs, KLM connects via Amsterdam and Lufthansa connects via Frankfurt and Munich. For premium long-haul routing, Qatar Airways connects via Doha to New York/JFK, Los Angeles, and Dallas.
US Entry — The Critical Warning
On January 1, 2026, the US expanded its visa restrictions from 19 to 39 countries. Currently, these 39 countries are subject to varying degrees of visa suspension, including full visa restrictions in 19 countries. Importantly, the UK is not on this list. However, UK fans travelling with dual nationality — holding a second passport from one of the affected countries — should verify their specific position with a qualified immigration adviser before booking travel.
Country 2: Canada — eTA Required
Essential Facts: UK passport holders require a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly into Canada for matches in Toronto or Vancouver. The eTA is separate from the US ESTA. It costs CAD$7, takes minutes to apply for online at canada.ca/eta, and is typically approved quickly. Canada confirmed no special World Cup visa — standard tourist entry rules apply.
What UK Fans Need
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is working closely with FIFA and federal partners to support a smooth and secure event through timely and reliable immigration screening. Accordingly, visitors are encouraged to apply early to avoid delays.
UK passport holders are visa-exempt for Canada and therefore need an eTA — not a full Temporary Resident Visa. Specifically, visa-exempt foreigners arriving by air must obtain an eTA before boarding. Processing is generally quick, but due to the massive volume of applications for the World Cup, IRCC has instructed the system to prioritise applications from those attending the tournament.
Apply at canada.ca/eta — the only official Canadian government eTA portal. Cost: CAD$7 (approximately £4). The eTA links electronically to your passport and remains valid for five years or until your passport expires. It covers multiple trips to Canada during that period.
Canada Host Cities — Toronto and Vancouver
The World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across 16 cities. Notably, Canada will make its debut as a men’s FIFA World Cup host, with 13 matches taking place between Toronto and Vancouver. Specifically, Toronto hosts at BMO Field, while Vancouver hosts at BC Place.
Fly from the UK to Canadian host cities:Air Canada operates direct London Heathrow to Toronto (YYZ) and Vancouver (YVR) — the primary carrier for both Canadian host cities. British Airways also serves both YYZ and YVR direct from London Gatwick and Heathrow. Both airports additionally operate US preclearance facilities, allowing UK fans to clear US immigration before boarding onward flights to US host cities.
The Critical Point: eTA and ESTA Are Separate Documents
This is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of multi-country World Cup travel. Even if you already have an approved ESTA, you still need a Canadian eTA for flights into Toronto or Vancouver. Furthermore, a US or Canadian visa does not grant automatic entry to the other country. Therefore, UK fans attending matches in both the US and Canada need both documents — there is no shortcut.
Country 3: Mexico — Visa-Free, FMM on Arrival
Essential Facts: UK passport holders enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days. No advance visa application or electronic authorisation is required. On arrival at a Mexican airport, you receive an FMM (Forma Migratoria Multiple) tourist card — the physical record of your permitted stay. Keep it safe. Losing it incurs a fine of approximately US$40 at the airport immigration office.
What UK Fans Need
Nationals of most European countries, the US, Canada, UK, Japan, South Korea, Australia and many others can enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days as tourists. Accordingly, no pre-travel electronic authorisation equivalent to the US ESTA or Canadian eTA is necessary for UK passport holders entering Mexico.
Notably, most major Mexican airports (MEX, GDL, MTY) now use Digital E-Gates — ensure you keep the printed receipt the gate issues, as it has replaced the paper FMM form and officers require it on exit.
Mexico Host Cities — Three Cities Confirmed
Mexico hosts matches across three cities: Mexico City (Estadio Azteca — opening match on 11 June), Guadalajara (Estadio Akron), and Monterrey (Estadio BBVA). Importantly, these are the only three Mexican venues. All other matches, including all knockout rounds from the quarter-finals onwards, take place in the US.
The FMM — Do Not Lose It
The FMM is your official immigration record in Mexico. If you lose it, there is a fine of approximately US$40 payable at the airport immigration office — budget extra time accordingly. If you drove in, cancel your TIP at the border — failure to do so results in forfeiting your deposit. For air arrivals at Mexican World Cup host cities, the immigration officer issues a digital receipt — keep it stored on your phone and in print.
Free for air arrivals staying under 7 days; ~US$35 for longer stays

Duration of stay (up to 180 days)
⚠️ Critical reminder: Each document is country-specific. Specifically, an approved ESTA does not cover Canada. Similarly, an eTA does not cover the US. These are three separate immigration systems. Therefore, apply for each one independently.
Passport Validity — The Rule All Three Countries Apply
All three host nations require a valid passport for entry. Specifically, the standard recommendation — enforced by most airlines at check-in — is that your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from North America. In practice: if your last match is on 19 July 2026, your passport should ideally be valid until at least 19 January 2027.
If your passport expires before that date, renew it now. Notably, HMPO (His Majesty’s Passport Office) standard service takes up to 10 weeks. Apply at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport.
What the UK FCDO Currently Advises
The UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) publishes live travel advisories for all three host nations. Always check current advisories before booking and before travel at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.
As of May 2026, the FCDO advises normal precautions for the US and Canada. For Mexico, however, the FCDO advises caution in certain regions — while the three host cities (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey) are not subject to the highest-level advisories, UK fans should nonetheless check the specific guidance for their intended travel areas before departure. The FCDO Mexico page is at gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mexico.
Act Now: The Application Timeline
The tournament opens in 13 days. If you have tickets and have not yet applied for your entry documents, the timeline is therefore urgent.
