Quick Answer

Airalo is a travel eSIM store that sells data plans for more than 200 destinations, and it’s an easy way to stay online over Christmas and New Year without a physical SIM.

You buy a plan in the Airalo app and install it on Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch it on when you land. Because many plans are data-only, you also keep your usual number for calls and bank texts.

The Sunset Weekly Connection Reality: Setting up an Airalo travel eSIM before flying provides instant, hassle-free data access across more than 200 destinations during holiday trips. Utilizing data-only plans ensures seamless internet connectivity upon landing while preserving your main phone line for critical calls and security texts.

Where These Prices and Rules Come From

First of all, every price and rule here comes from Airalo’s own plan pages and Help Center. I also read recent customer reviews and traveller discussions to see where people actually get stuck. Then, for the roaming comparison, I used each UK network’s own website.

As a result, a few popular claims didn’t make it in. For example, some guides quote Airalo’s unlimited plans as giving 3 to 5 GB of fast data a day. Airalo, however, says its unlimited plans give 3 GB of high-speed data per 24 hours, and that the exact threshold depends on the package.

How an Airalo eSIM Works

First, an eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of swapping a plastic card, you download a plan straight onto the device.

With Airalo, you choose a destination, pick a package and install it in a few taps. So, while you’re away, Airalo handles your mobile data, and Airalo says your main line can stay on for calls and texts.

There are three kinds of Airalo eSIM:

  • Local: one country, such as the UK, Germany or the USA.
  • Regional: several countries on one plan, such as Europe or North America.
  • Global: coverage across many destinations, for trips with several stops.

Will Your Phone Work With Airalo?

Will Your Phone Work With Airalo?

Before you buy anything, check your phone. According to Airalo, your device must:

  • support eSIM,
  • not be locked to a carrier or network, and
  • not be jailbroken (iPhone) or rooted (Android).

After that, the quickest test is to dial *#06# in your phone’s calling app. If you see a 32-digit number labelled EID, your phone supports eSIM.

In general, most recent phones qualify. For instance, Airalo lists the iPhone XS, XR and SE (2020 and 2022) onwards, Galaxy S20 to S25 models and Pixel phones from the Pixel 2. However, there are regional exceptions, such as iPhones from mainland China and US versions of the Galaxy S20 and S21. If you’re unsure, check Airalo’s device list before you pay.

Unlimited or Fixed Data?

Unlimited plans especially suit heavy users. Airalo says they give 3 GB of high-speed data per 24 hours, after which speeds drop to 1 Mbps until the next 24-hour period. Since the exact threshold depends on the package, check the plan details before you pay.

Fixed-data plans, on the other hand, are often cheaper for light users. For example, Airalo’s Germany eSIM lists 5 GB for 7 days at $10.00 and 10 GB for 7 days at $15.00. That’s plenty for maps, messages and a few photos if your hotel has Wi-Fi.

How Much Data Do You Need Over Christmas?

In practice, your data use depends more on habits than on trip length. As a simple guide:

  • Light use: maps, WhatsApp, emails and train tickets, with hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings. A small fixed-data plan usually covers this.
  • Moderate use: the above, plus social media, photo uploads and the odd video call. Choose a larger fixed-data plan with some spare.
  • Heavy use: streaming, frequent video calls or sharing data with a laptop or family member. In that case, an unlimited plan avoids running short.

If you’re unsure, start smaller. Then top up in the app if you need more, rather than paying for data you won’t use.

Which Airalo Plan Should You Buy?

Which Airalo Plan Should You Buy

Here’s how I’d choose, based on where you’re coming from and where you’re going next.

  • UK to EU Christmas markets: the European Union and United Kingdom eSIM covers both ends of the trip on one plan.
  • UK to Switzerland or Norway: these countries sit outside the EU, so look at the wider Europe eSIM and confirm the country is listed before you buy.
  • USA or Canada to the UK and Europe: the European Union and United Kingdom eSIM suits a London and Paris trip, while a Germany eSIM is the simpler choice for a markets-only visit.
  • Germany to London: the United Kingdom eSIM covers your stay, because the UK falls outside the EU’s roaming rules.
  • Between the USA and Canada: the North America eSIM covers both countries, plus Mexico, whereas a single-country plan doesn’t.
  • To Australia for a summer Christmas: the Australia eSIM runs on Optus, according to Airalo.
  • To Dubai for winter sun: the United Arab Emirates eSIM runs on Etisalat, according to Airalo.

Airalo vs Roaming With Your Home Network

Airalo vs Roaming With Your Home Network

Roaming costs, of course, depend on your network, your plan and when you joined. Here’s what the main UK networks list on their own websites.

UK networkEuropeUSA and other long-haul
EETravel Data Pass packages from £2.72 a dayCheck EE’s roaming calculator by country
Vodafone£2.75 a day (Zone B), unless your plan includes roaming£8 a day for the USA and Australia (Zone C), unless your plan includes it
Three£2.75 per 24 hours (Go Roam in Europe), if you joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025£8 per 24 hours in Go Roam Around the World destinations
O2EU roaming included on Pay Monthly SIMs, up to 25 GBTravel Inclusive Zone and Travel Bolt On options

Sources: EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 websites, checked 29 October 2026. Older plans may have different rates.

So what does that mean for a week away? For a short trip to Europe, a UK daily pass and an Airalo plan can cost a similar amount, and some UK plans include EU roaming already. Therefore, check your own plan first.

For long-haul trips, however, the gap is usually wider. For example, seven days in the USA at Vodafone’s £8 daily rate comes to £56, while Airalo’s 7-day unlimited USA eSIM is listed at $25.00.

Travelling from elsewhere? EU rules let you roam at home prices across the EU, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The UK isn’t on that list, so German travellers heading to London should check their provider’s charges. Similarly, travellers from the USA, Canada and Australia should check their network’s international pass before deciding.

How to Set Up Airalo Before You Fly

  1. Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
  2. Download the Airalo app and choose your destination plan.
  3. Read the Activation Policy in the plan’s Additional Information section.
  4. Install the eSIM at home on stable Wi-Fi. Airalo says you can install it in advance, even when you’re outside its coverage area.
  5. Rename the new line to something like “Airalo” so you can tell your lines apart.
  6. When you land, switch the eSIM on, select it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line if needed.

When Does the Plan Start?

According to Airalo, the validity period starts when the eSIM activates. Most Airalo eSIMs activate when they connect to a supported network at your destination. However, some activate at installation, wherever you are. That’s why it’s worth checking the Activation Policy first, especially if you’re buying early in December.

Keeping Your Number for Calls and Bank Texts

Christmas is a busy time for card payments, so you’ll want your bank’s security texts while you’re away. Fortunately, with a data-only eSIM, Airalo says you can keep using your main line for calls and texts.

  • On iPhone: go to Settings > Mobile Data, turn on your main line and set it as the Default Voice Line. Then make sure the Airalo eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  • On Samsung: open SIM card manager, assign your main line to calls and texts, and keep the Airalo eSIM for mobile data.
  • On Pixel: go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs, set your main line for calls and texts, and keep the Airalo eSIM for data.

One point to remember: your home network may still charge for calls and texts while you’re abroad. Airalo advises checking roaming charges with your provider before you travel.

Using Airalo as a Hotspot

Yes, you can share your Airalo data with a laptop or tablet, just as you would at home. Airalo says personal hotspot works as long as your device and the network support it.

However, some eSIMs need an APN for this. If yours does, the details are on the installation page. On iPhone, enter the APN in the Personal Hotspot APN field. On Android, set the APN before you turn on the hotspot. Also, on unlimited plans, Airalo notes that hotspot use counts towards your daily high-speed allowance.

Running Out of Data: Top-Ups and Renewals

When your data runs low, you have two choices in the app:

  • Top up: many Airalo eSIMs can be topped up, so you don’t need to install a new one.
  • Renewals: when switched on, a renewal buys the same package automatically once your eSIM has 10% data left.

A plan also ends early if you use all its data before the validity period finishes. So if you’re travelling for Christmas and New Year, turn on renewals before you leave rather than mid-trip.

What Travellers Say About Airalo

Before writing this guide, I read recent customer reviews and traveller forum threads to see how Airalo works in real life. Here are the common themes, paraphrased.

  • Easy setup: many reviewers say buying and activating took minutes. One traveller from Canada said adding a top-up was just as simple.
  • Ready on landing: several travellers like being connected the moment they arrive, instead of hunting for a SIM shop.
  • Quick support: a number of reviewers mention fast help through WhatsApp chat, including step-by-step help with activation.
  • Works across borders: one reviewer used the same service in Italy, Germany, Hungary and Romania without problems.

Travellers also share useful tips. For instance, one US reviewer found an automatic top-up needed Wi-Fi to restart, so keep hotel Wi-Fi handy when your plan renews. Meanwhile, forum users point out that data-only plans don’t include a phone number, so apps like WhatsApp handle calls over data. Some also note that turning off your home line on an iPhone can affect iMessage, which is another reason to leave it on for texts.

Christmas Travel Tips for Your eSIM

  • Install early, not at the airport: do it at home on your own Wi-Fi, so you’re not relying on a busy public network.
  • Screenshot the setup details: keep your APN and installation page handy in case you need them offline.
  • Pick a regional plan for multi-stop trips: one plan for London, Paris and Cologne is simpler than three.
  • Keep your home line on: you’ll still get bank and delivery texts on your usual number.
  • Check the plan length: a 7-day plan won’t cover Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day, so count the days first.

Is Airalo Right for Your Christmas Trip?

Airalo is a good fit if:

  • you’re flying long-haul, where home roaming passes add up quickly,
  • you’re visiting several countries and want one plan,
  • you want a fixed price with no surprise bill, or
  • you’d like to land connected without finding a SIM shop.

Check your home plan first if:

  • your plan already includes roaming in Europe, or
  • you need a lot of calls and texts on your usual number.

Final Verdict

Overall, for most Christmas and New Year trips, Airalo is a simple way to stay online. You can pick a plan for one country, a region or several stops, install it at home and land connected. Just check your phone, read the Activation Policy and keep your usual line on for bank texts. Then compare the plan price with your home network’s roaming rate for the same trip.

FAQ’s

Is Airalo legit?

Yes. Airalo says more than 30 million people use its eSIMs, and it covers over 200 destinations. It also offers 24/7 support, including WhatsApp chat.

Can I install my Airalo eSIM before I travel?

Yes. Airalo says you can install it whenever you like, as long as you have a stable internet connection. Most plans then start when they connect to a network at your destination.

Does Airalo give me a phone number?

Many Airalo plans are data-only, so they don’t come with a number. However, some destinations offer Data / Calls / Texts packages. Either way, you can keep your usual line on for calls and texts.

Yes. Airalo’s European Union and United Kingdom eSIM covers 28 countries. Alternatively, the wider Europe eSIM covers 41 countries.
