Quick Answer
Emirates Skywards is Emirates’ loyalty programme, and Emirates says membership is complimentary. You earn Skywards Miles on Emirates and flydubai flights and with partners, then spend them on reward flights, upgrades, Cash+Miles and more.
Separately, Tier Miles move you up from Blue to Silver, Gold and Platinum. The biggest change for 2027 is to expiry: from 1 June 2027, new Miles will last three years from the month you earn them.
The Sunset Weekly Connection Reality: Free membership in Emirates Skywards provides accessible rewards across Emirates and flydubai routes, allowing members to earn Skywards Miles while building tier status from Blue to Platinum. Staying aware of upcoming policy updates, such as the three-year validity rule starting 1 June 2027, ensures you maximize the value of every earned mile.

Two Skywards Claims You Shouldn’t Rely On
First of all, every rule in this guide comes from Emirates’ own Skywards pages, programme rules and press releases. I also read traveller discussions to see which questions trip people up most.
As a result, some common claims didn’t make it in. For example, you’ll sometimes read that you can reach Silver with 25 flights or Gold with 50 flights. However, Emirates’ tier page lists Tier Miles thresholds only, with no flight-count alternative. Similarly, you may see fixed values per Mile for Cash+Miles, but Emirates says there’s no set conversion rate.
How Emirates Skywards Works
Skywards uses two currencies, and it helps to keep them apart.
- Skywards Miles are what you spend. You can buy, gift or transfer them, and you earn them on flights and with partners.
- Tier Miles decide your status. You earn them mainly on Emirates and flydubai flights, and on codeshares with an EK flight number. In contrast, they can’t be bought or moved, and partner activity doesn’t earn them.
Tier Miles last up to 13 months, while Skywards Miles last three years. So, in practice, your status depends on how much you fly in a year, whereas your Miles balance can build over time.
How to Earn Skywards Miles

On Emirates and flydubai Flights
According to Emirates, the Miles you earn on each flight depend on three things: your route, your fare type and your cabin. You earn both Skywards Miles and Tier Miles on every fare type, including Special fares, although Special fares earn the minimum.
Miles post after you fly, in two stages: once for your outbound flight and once for your return. Emirates doesn’t publish a fixed table on its earning page, so use the official Miles Calculator to see what your exact flight will earn.
Tier Bonuses
Once you reach a higher tier, you earn extra Skywards Miles on Emirates and flydubai flights:
| Tier | Bonus Skywards Miles |
|---|---|
| Silver | +30% |
| Gold | +75% |
| Platinum | +100% |

With Partners
Beyond flying, Emirates lists partners in five categories: airlines, hotels, car rental, retail and lifestyle, and banking. For example, you can earn on hotel stays with partners such as Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton and Hyatt, and on car hire with Avis, Hertz and SIXT.
However, remember that partner activity earns Skywards Miles but not Tier Miles. Therefore, partners help you collect rewards, but they won’t speed up your status.
My Family: Pooling Miles
If you travel as a family, My Family lets you pool Miles into one account. A Family Head aged 18 or over can invite up to seven family members, including children. Each member can then contribute up to 100% of the Miles they earn, so you reach rewards faster together.
Emirates Skywards Tier Levels
| Tier | How to qualify | Benefits highlighted by Emirates |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Join Skywards | Instant upgrades with Miles at check-in or on board, waitlist priority |
| Silver | 25,000 Tier Miles in 12 months | Blue benefits, plus Emirates Business Class lounge access in Dubai |
| Gold | 50,000 Tier Miles in 12 months | Silver benefits, plus complimentary Economy seat selection for you and your booking |
| Platinum | 150,000 Tier Miles in 12 months, plus at least one qualifying First or Business Class flight | First and Business Class lounges worldwide with guests, Gold tier for a partner, Miles that don’t expire while Platinum |

Your tier is based on Tier Miles earned over the previous 12 months. Once you reach a tier, your benefits last for 12 months, and then Emirates reviews your status.
If you fly only once or twice a year, though, it makes more sense to focus on Skywards Miles than on status. After all, Tier Miles last only up to 13 months, so they reset if you don’t fly regularly.
How to Spend Skywards Miles

Classic Reward Flights
Classic Rewards let you book flights to any Emirates or flydubai destination, in any class. According to Emirates, rewards start from 5,000 Miles, while taxes are paid separately. Reward tickets are valid for up to 12 months, and Emirates says you can book flights up to 11 months in advance.
Keep in mind that Classic Reward tickets don’t earn Skywards Miles or Tier Miles.
Upgrades
Upgrades start from 7,020 Miles, according to Emirates. Even so, your fare type decides when you can upgrade:
- Flex and Flex Plus: upgrade any time up to 6 hours before departure.
- Saver: upgrade only at online check-in, between 48 and 6 hours before departure.
- Special: these fares can’t be upgraded.
Blue members and above can also request instant upgrades at check-in or on board, subject to availability. Also note that a cabin upgraded with Miles doesn’t earn Tier Miles for the higher cabin.
Cash+Miles
Cash+Miles is the most flexible option. You can use as many Miles as you have to reduce the cash price of an Emirates or flydubai ticket, so you don’t need a full Classic Reward balance. In addition, Emirates lets you use Cash+Miles for seat selection, excess baggage and Emirates lounge access.
However, there’s no set conversion rate. Emirates says the value depends on factors such as route, date, fare, cabin and tier, and it shows the exact rate on the payment page. As a result, it’s worth comparing the Cash+Miles saving with a Classic Reward before you decide. Note that Cash+Miles can’t be used to upgrade an existing booking, except for Promotional Upgrade offers.
Partner Rewards
You can also spend Miles with partner airlines, hotels and on experiences. In addition, Skywards Exclusives offers sports events, performances and other experiences, either for Miles or through Miles auctions.
Which Airlines Work With Skywards?
Emirates lists 21 airline partners. For UK travellers, two are particularly useful for short breaks, because you can spend Miles with them even though you can’t earn: easyJet and Jet2.
| Partner type | Airlines |
|---|---|
| Earn and spend | flydubai, Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air Mauritius, Azul, Bangkok Airways, Copa Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, GOL, Japan Airlines, Jetstar, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, Olympic Air, Qantas, South African Airways, TAP Air Portugal and United Airlines |
| Spend only | easyJet, Jet2 and Condor (earning ended for Condor flights flown from 1 May 2026) |
Source: Emirates Skywards partner pages, checked 30 October 2026.
On partner rewards, the rules differ from Emirates’ own. For instance, Condor rewards apply only to direct, Condor-operated flights, and taxes and surcharges are paid separately. By contrast, easyJet and Jet2 rewards are booked online only, and the Miles price already includes taxes and surcharges. Also, Jet2 rewards can’t be booked from Skysurfers, My Family or Business Rewards accounts. So check each partner’s page before you book.
Do Skywards Miles Expire?
Yes. Here’s how expiry works now and how it changes in 2027.
| Miles earned | When they expire |
|---|---|
| Before 1 June 2027 | Three years after earning, at the end of your birth month |
| From 1 June 2027 | Three years after the activity, at the end of that month |
| While you hold Platinum | They don’t expire |

Emirates gives an example. Miles earned on 10 May 2024 by a member with a July birthday expire on 31 July 2027 under the current rule. Under the new rule, Miles earned on that date would expire on 31 May 2027 for every member, whatever their birth month. Importantly, Emirates says the change won’t affect Miles already in your account.
Extending or Reinstating Miles
If your Miles are due to expire within three months, you can pay to extend them by 12 months. Alternatively, if they’ve already expired, you can ask to reinstate them within six months, and they’ll then last 12 months from reinstatement. In both cases, Emirates sets a minimum of 1,000 and a maximum of 50,000 Miles per calendar year.
What Members Say About Skywards

Before writing this guide, I read traveller forums to see how Skywards works in real life. Here are the common themes, paraphrased.
- Upgrades: many members see upgrades as the most rewarding use of Miles, although some find the price gap between cabins varies a lot.
- New cabins: travellers often discuss Emirates’ Premium Economy and Business Class products when deciding where to spend Miles.
- Rules: some members find eligibility rules confusing, especially around fare types.
The practical lesson is simple: check your fare type before you book. That way, you’ll know straight away whether you can upgrade and how much you’ll earn.
Common Skywards Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking a Special fare and planning to upgrade. Special fares can’t be upgraded.
- Expecting partner activity to count for status. Partners earn Skywards Miles, not Tier Miles.
- Forgetting expiry under the new rules. From 1 June 2027, your birth month no longer sets the date for new Miles.
- Using Cash+Miles without comparing. Because the rate varies, compare it with a Classic Reward first.
- Not adding your number to a booking. Add your Skywards number every time, so every flight counts.
Is Emirates Skywards Worth Joining?
Skywards makes sense if:
- you fly Emirates at least once a year, since membership is complimentary,
- you fly long-haul with Emirates, since earning depends on your route, fare and cabin,
- your family travels together and can pool Miles with My Family, or
- you’d use Miles on easyJet or Jet2 short breaks.
Think about your goals first if:
- you fly rarely, because Miles expire after three years, or
- you’re aiming for status, since Silver needs 25,000 Tier Miles in 12 months.
For a UK traveller who flies once or twice a year, the honest answer is to join and collect Miles, but not to chase status. Then use your Miles before they expire, whether on Cash+Miles, an upgrade or a partner reward.
Final Verdict
Emirates Skywards is an easy programme to join, and it rewards the flights you’d take anyway. Skywards Miles give you plenty of ways to spend, from reward flights and upgrades to Cash+Miles and easyJet or Jet2 flights. Meanwhile, Tier Miles unlock real benefits, such as lounge access in Dubai from Silver. Just remember the new expiry rule for Miles earned from 1 June 2027, and plan your redemptions with it in mind.
