Etihad Airways will significantly expand its China network by adding five new routes. As a result, it will operate 35 weekly flights across six mainland cities. This move improves one-stop connections via Abu Dhabi for travellers between Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

On 13 April 2026, Etihad Airways announced a major expansion of its mainland China operations. The airline plans to introduce five new destinations from Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi. As a result, it will deliver one of its largest single-market increases in recent years.

Currently, Etihad serves only Beijing Daxing in mainland China. However, the airline will expand that footprint to six destinations once all routes launch.

Route launches and timeline

Etihad will begin the rollout with daily flights to Shanghai Pudong on 1 October 2026. Then, in early March 2027, the airline will add four more routes across key Chinese regions.

Planned services include:

✧ Etihad Airways New China Routes ✧

Route Destination Frequency (Weekly) Launch Date
AUH – PVG Shanghai Pudong 7 flights 1 October 2026
AUH – CAN Guangzhou 7 flights 4 March 2027
AUH – HGH Hangzhou 5 flights 4 March 2027
AUH – SZX Shenzhen 7 flights 7 March 2027
AUH – TFU Chengdu 5 flights 5 March 2027
*All routes depart from Abu Dhabi (AUH) to destinations in China. Launch dates and frequencies subject to regulatory approval.

Together, these routes will complement the existing daily service to Beijing.

Aircraft and onboard product

Etihad will operate all new routes using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Each aircraft includes 28 Business Class seats and 262 Economy seats. Therefore, passengers can expect a consistent onboard experience across the network.

Strategic importance

This expansion reflects rising demand between the UAE and China. In particular, it supports growth in trade, tourism and investment. At the same time, it strengthens Abu Dhabi’s role as a global transit hub.

Moreover, the additional capacity will improve access to major Chinese business and technology centres. It will also support cargo operations by linking key manufacturing hubs with international markets.

Partnership with China Eastern

Etihad will run all five routes within its joint venture with China Eastern Airlines. As a result, passengers will benefit from better coordination and smoother connections.

In addition, China Eastern already operates routes between several Chinese cities and the UAE. Therefore, travellers can access a wider domestic network within China.

Etihad also works with SF Airlines on cargo operations. This partnership further strengthens freight connectivity between China and global markets.

What it means for travellers

For travellers from the UK and Europe, this expansion creates more route options. For example, passengers can now reach cities like Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Chengdu with a single stop in Abu Dhabi.

Furthermore, increased competition and capacity may lead to more competitive fares. This is especially likely during the early launch period.

Travel tips

Travellers should monitor Etihad’s website and app for booking updates. In general, early bookings offer better prices and availability.

Additionally, flexible tickets can provide more security during the initial launch phase. Travellers planning multi-city trips should also consider connections with China Eastern.

Finally, adding a stopover in Abu Dhabi can enhance the overall travel experience.

Etihad Guest tiers and benefits for 2026

Etihad Guest features five membership levels, starting with Bronze as the entry tier. The programme assesses qualification over a rolling 12-month period rather than a fixed calendar year.

For a limited time, eligible members benefit from a 25% reduction in the Tier Mile requirements for Silver, Gold and Platinum. This reduced threshold remains in place until 31 March 2027. Under standard criteria, members must earn:

  • Silver: 25,000 Tier Miles, including 10,000 from flights
  • Gold: 50,000 Tier Miles, including 20,000 from flights
  • Platinum: 125,000 Tier Miles, including 40,000 from flights
  • Emerald: USD 150,000 in eligible Etihad flight spend (excluding taxes)

Each tier introduces progressively stronger perks. Silver members receive lounge access along with bonus miles. Gold members also gain priority boarding and access to chauffeur services. At the top end, Platinum and Emerald tiers include First Class lounge access, miles that do not expire, and personalised benefits such as complimentary upgrades or home check-in.

All members enjoy complimentary chat-based Wi-Fi onboard. In addition, higher-tier members receive faster immigration processing and access to dedicated customer support channels.
