Quick Answer

MileagePlus is United’s free-to-join loyalty programme with four Premier elite tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum and 1K. Notably, an invitation-only Global Services level sits above them all. Members earn MileagePlus miles for flying and everyday spending, alongside Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) to advance status. Miles never expire.

From 2 April 2026, earning rates restructured entirely around Premier status and United card ownership. Consequently, general members without a card now earn zero miles on Basic Economy fares. London Heathrow departures operate from Terminal 2 (LHR T2), with the United Club lounge located in the T2B satellite terminal.

The Sunset Weekly Connection Reality: United’s April 2026 earning overhaul quietly made a United co-branded card almost essential for general members. Without one, Basic Economy now earns nothing at all — a meaningfully harder line than the reduced-rate approach most competing US carriers still use.

2026 Update Alert — Three Changes Every MileagePlus Member Needs to Know

What Changed With Earning Rates on 2 April 2026?

United Airlines completely restructured how MileagePlus miles are earned on United flights. Specifically, this took effect on 2 April 2026. Importantly, the previous distance-based earning model is gone. Specifically, miles now earn based on the eligible fare amount. Notably, two factors set the multiplier: Premier status and United card ownership. Specifically, three distinct rate tiers now exist. These are the MileagePlus rate (no card), the Cardmember rate (holding an eligible card), and the Pay-with-card rate (paying with that specific card).

Forensic Observation: One change matters most. Specifically, it affects general members without a United card flying Basic Economy. Importantly, as of 2 April 2026, these members earn zero MileagePlus miles on Basic Economy and JetBlue Blue Basic fares. Importantly, this is a complete change from the previous reduced-rate model. Notably, UK members who occasionally fly United Basic Economy without a US-issued United card should understand this. Notably, do not assume any earning at all on these fares.

United Earning Rates by Status and Card — Effective 2 April 2026

Standard Fares: MileagePlus Rate vs Cardmember Rate

Premier TierNo Card (MileagePlus Rate)Eligible Card (Cardmember Rate)
General member3 miles per $16 miles per $1
Premier Silver5 miles per $18 miles per $1
Premier Gold6 miles per $19 miles per $1
Premier Platinum7 miles per $110 miles per $1
Premier 1K9 miles per $112 miles per $1

Source: united.com/en/us/fly/mileageplus/whats-new.html — verified June 2026. Rates apply to United and United Express flights booked on or after 2 April 2026. Eligible fare excludes government-imposed taxes and fees.

Basic Economy Earning Rates — Effective 2 April 2026

Premier TierNo CardEligible United Card
General member0 miles3 miles per $1
Premier Silver2 miles per $15 miles per $1
Premier Gold3 miles per $16 miles per $1
Premier Platinum4 miles per $17 miles per $1
Premier 1K6 miles per $19 miles per $1

Source: united.com — verified June 2026. A United card restores earning entirely for general members on Basic Economy fares; the no-annual-fee Gateway Card qualifies once the $10,000 annual spend threshold is met.

Honest Warning: Paying with a specific United card — Explorer, Quest, or Club — unlocks an even higher Pay-with-card rate. Specifically, this reaches as high as 17 miles per $1 for Premier 1K members using the Club Card. However, UK members should verify their specific card’s eligibility directly at united.com. Importantly, UK-issued co-branded cards carry separate terms from the US-market Chase cards referenced in United’s own rate tables.

What Is the New Cardmember Award Pricing Discount?

Additionally, United introduced a discount on award flight redemptions for eligible Cardmembers, alongside the earning rate overhaul. Importantly, this took effect on the same date, 2 April 2026. Specifically, non-Premier Cardmembers receive at least 10% fewer miles required to book a United or United Express award flight. Notably, Premier members holding an eligible card receive at least 15% fewer miles required. Consequently, this stacks with the existing Premier-tier discount structure. Consequently, a co-branded card is becoming increasingly central to extracting value from MileagePlus. Importantly, this discount applies only to standard United and United Express award flights, not Miles Plus Money bookings. Notably, taxes and fees remain payable in cash regardless.

What Is the United–JetBlue Blue Sky Partnership?

Importantly, United and JetBlue’s “Blue Sky” partnership reached its most significant milestone on 14 May 2026. Notably, reciprocal elite benefits went live for the first time. MileagePlus Premier members now receive several benefits when flying JetBlue: priority boarding, complimentary extra-legroom seating (JetBlue’s EvenMore product) at check-in, priority check-in and security, free preferred seat selection after booking, one free checked bag, and same-day standby. Specifically, boarding priority maps by tier. Premier Platinum and 1K board JetBlue’s Group 1; Premier Gold boards Group 2; Premier Silver boards Group 3.

What Are the Limits of the Blue Sky Partnership?

Honest Warning: JetBlue-operated flights do not earn Premier Qualifying Points or Premier Qualifying Flights toward MileagePlus status. Importantly, this applies regardless of which loyalty number is credited. Notably, MileagePlus members can earn standard redeemable miles on eligible JetBlue fares at 5 miles per $1. However, these flights will never count toward Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K qualification. Additionally, lounge access and complimentary upgrades remain exclusive to each airline’s own elite members. Notably, Blue Sky does not extend United Club access to JetBlue flyers or vice versa.

United Airlines MileagePlus is the frequent flyer programme of United Airlines, a founding member of Star Alliance and the US carrier operating the most flights to London of any American airline. Specifically, from London Heathrow Terminal 2, United serves multiple daily nonstop routes to the United States, connecting UK travellers to a domestic network covering over 200 destinations across the Americas. The programme, consistently recognised as one of the best in the industry by Global Traveler magazine, runs on a straightforward principle: miles never expire, qualification is spend-and-flight based, and status delivers tangible value at every tier.

Source: united.com — verified June 2026. United operates a flexible status model allowing qualification via a combination of flights and points, or points alone. MileagePlus miles remain valid indefinitely regardless of activity.

Why Join MileagePlus?

Miles That Never Expire

MileagePlus miles carry no expiry date under any circumstances. Notably, a mile earned from a flight in 2015 remains fully valid in 2026 with no activity requirement to sustain it. Specifically, for UK members who fly United once or twice a year transatlantically and top up their balance through occasional hotel stays or credit card transfers, this matters greatly. Importantly, the no-expiry policy removes the most common risk in loyalty programme participation. Notably, no 24-month inactivity windows, no rolling clock to manage.

Mileage Pooling for Families and Friends

Notably, MileagePlus allows free miles pooling between up to five family members or close friends through the Mileage Pooling feature at united.com. Notably, any member can contribute miles to a shared pool, and any member of the group can redeem from it. Importantly, there is no fee to join or maintain a pool. Notably, this makes it one of the more generous sharing mechanisms available among US carrier programmes. Importantly, for families targeting a long-haul premium cabin redemption, pooling accelerates access to the required balance significantly.

Recognised Programme Quality

MileagePlus has received Global Traveler’s Best Frequent Flyer Programme award multiple times. Specifically, this reflects its consistently competitive earning structure, broad Star Alliance network access, and the no-expiry miles policy. For UK members, strong London Heathrow frequency combines with genuine Star Alliance Gold lounge access at Gold tier. Consequently, this makes the programme particularly practical compared with US carriers that rely on joint venture partners for their primary London presence.

Terminal Intelligence: Flying United from London

London Heathrow Terminal 2

Importantly, United Airlines operates exclusively from London Heathrow Terminal 2 (LHR T2). Notably, all United departures leave from the T2B satellite terminal. Specifically, this is a connected concourse, reached by escalators and moving walkways from the main T2 building. Notably, the T2B satellite is shared with other Star Alliance carriers, including Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, and ANA. Consequently, this makes it possible to compare lounge options across the alliance before departure.

Specifically, United operates nonstop services from LHR T2 to major US hubs. Specifically, these include Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Denver International (DEN), Houston George Bush (IAH), Los Angeles International (LAX), Newark Liberty International (EWR), San Francisco International (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD), among others. Importantly, frequency varies by season — verify current schedules at united.com.

The United Club at London Heathrow T2B

Notably, the United Club at London Heathrow Terminal 2B sits between gates B34 and B35, open daily from 05:00 to 18:00. Importantly, the lounge is operated directly by United and carries elevated standards compared with most domestic United Club locations. It features a comprehensive buffet with rotating British-inspired hot dishes and a full-service bar with complimentary premium drinks, including wines, beers, champagne, and cocktails. Additionally, shower suites with complimentary toiletries and ample seating with natural light complete the space. Notably, the bar is the longest in Heathrow, with 25 seats. Additionally, menu items rotate quarterly under the direction of a resident chef.

Premier Gold members and above must be travelling on a qualifying Star Alliance flight. Polaris access is available only for passengers on international long-haul itineraries. Day passes are subject to lounge capacity and availability.

No Polaris Lounge at LHR: United does not operate a dedicated Polaris Lounge at London Heathrow. The United Club in T2B serves as the pre-departure facility for all travellers including Polaris Business Class passengers. Polaris Lounges with full à la carte dining operate at Chicago O’Hare, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, and San Francisco. Members transiting those US hubs before or after the London leg can access the Polaris Lounge at those locations on the same itinerary.

United Arrivals Lounge at LHR

United operates a dedicated Arrivals Lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 2. Specifically, it is located immediately after immigration and customs on the arrivals level. Notably, the lounge is open daily from 06:00 to 14:00. It offers an à la carte breakfast menu, shower suites with clothing press service, and non-alcoholic beverages. Importantly, access is exclusive to arriving United Polaris Business Class passengers on a same-day ticket. Notably, no guests are permitted, and United Club memberships or day passes do not apply to this facility.

Aircraft and Cabin Products on LHR Routes

Specifically, United operates Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Boeing 777-200ERs on its London Heathrow services. Cabin classes across long-haul LHR routes include:

  • United Polaris Business Class: fully flat-bed seats with direct aisle access, à la carte dining, bedding by Saks Fifth Avenue, and Sunday Riley amenity kits on long-haul routes.
  • United Premium Plus (Premium Economy): available on select 787-9 and 777 configurations, with wider seats, extra legroom, and enhanced meal service.
  • Economy Plus: extra legroom seats available for purchase or complimentary to eligible Premier members.
  • Economy: standard cabin.

Verify aircraft type at the time of booking on united.com, as fleet deployment varies by route and season.

Earning MileagePlus Miles

Flying with United and United Express

As detailed in the 2026 Update Alert above, MileagePlus earning on United-marketed and United-operated flights restructured entirely from 2 April 2026, now based on the eligible fare amount, Premier tier, and United card ownership rather than the previous distance-based model. Specifically, refer to the rate tables earlier in this article for exact figures by tier and card type.

Original Data Benchmark: A return United Polaris Business Class fare from London Heathrow (LHR) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) with an eligible spend of approximately $3,000 to $4,500 generates approximately 9,000 to 13,500 MileagePlus miles for a general member with no card under the new April 2026 rate (3 miles per $1), or 27,000 to 40,500 miles for a Premier 1K member using the Club Card to pay (9 miles per $1 base, scaling to the Pay-with-card rate). Use the United miles calculator at united.com to calculate exact totals for your specific booking under the current rate structure.

Star Alliance Partners and Other Airlines

Notably, MileagePlus miles earn on flights with all 28 or more Star Alliance member airlines. Importantly, the earning model is distance-based, weighted by booking class and the member’s Premier tier. This partner earning model is unaffected by the 2 April 2026 changes, which apply specifically to United-operated and United-marketed flights. Importantly, add your MileagePlus number to any Star Alliance booking before departure to ensure credit. Notably, miles on partner airlines typically post within seven days of the flight.

Everyday Earning: Shopping, Dining and Hotels

Additionally, United’s everyday partner network allows members to earn miles without flying. Key channels include:

  • MileagePlus Shopping: an online portal connecting members to hundreds of retail partners. Earning rates vary by retailer and promotion cycle, accessible at shopping.mileageplus.com.
  • MileagePlus Dining: earn miles on dining at thousands of participating restaurants by registering a credit or debit card at dining.mileageplus.com.
  • MileagePlus X app: a mobile app allowing members to earn bonus miles when making gift card purchases at participating merchants, including everyday retailers, restaurants, and entertainment providers.
  • Hotel partners: earn miles on stays at Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, Hilton, and other partner hotel brands. Rates vary by property and booking channel.
  • Car hire: earn miles with Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, and other partners on eligible rentals.

Chase United Credit Cards

United’s co-branded Chase credit cards in the US market are the fastest non-flight earning channel available. Consequently, they became significantly more important following the 2 April 2026 earning overhaul. Specifically, cards range from the entry-level United Gateway Card to the United Club Infinite Card. Key card earning rates include:

  • United Explorer Card: unlocks the Cardmember rate (6 miles per $1 for general members, scaling with Premier tier) plus the higher Pay-with-card rate when used to purchase the ticket directly. Also provides free first checked bag, two United Club one-time passes annually, and 1 PQP per $20 spent (capped at 1,000 PQP per year).
  • United Gateway Card: no annual fee; unlocks the Cardmember rate only after $10,000 in eligible calendar-year spend.
  • United Club Infinite Card: United Club membership included, the highest Pay-with-card earning tier, and 1 PQP per $15 spent.

UK residents holding US-issued Chase United cards earn PQP and miles on qualifying card spend under the rates above. Importantly, UK-issued United co-branded cards carry separate terms. Importantly, verify current UK card eligibility at united.com before planning a status strategy around card spending.

Sharing Cardmember Rates with Children

Importantly, from 2 April 2026, primary United Cardmembers can share two benefits with up to eight children under 18: their Cardmember earning rate and award pricing discount. Specifically, both the parent and child must have a date of birth saved on their MileagePlus account. Additionally, the child must also be linked to the parent’s account. Notably, when the child turns 18, they need to open their own qualifying card to continue receiving the higher rates.

Premier Elite Status: The Two-Metric System

How MileagePlus Status Works

MileagePlus Premier status uses two qualifying currencies: Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF). Specifically, PQP represents dollar spending on United flights, and for cardholders, eligible credit card purchases. PQF counts the number of actual flights taken on United or United Express-operated services.

Notably, members qualify for each tier through one of two routes. Specifically, they can meet both the PQF and PQP requirement, or meet a higher PQP-only threshold that removes the flight minimum. Notably, the PQP-only route requires at least four United or United Express flights during the qualification year regardless of which threshold is used. Specifically, the qualification year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Importantly, status earned during the year takes effect immediately and remains valid through 31 January of the following year.

2026 confirmation: United confirmed that PQP and PQF thresholds remain unchanged for the 2026 qualification year, independently of the earning rate restructure. Members targeting status for 2027 can plan with confidence against the same figures used for 2026.

PQP Starter Deposit for Existing Elites

Notably, members who held Premier status at the close of 2025 received a PQP starter deposit in early 2026. This gives existing elites a head start on requalification:

2026 PQP Head Start

Automatic Premier Qualifying Points Deposits for Existing Elites

Existing Tier (End of 2025)PQP Deposited for 2026
Premier Silver300 PQP
Premier Gold600 PQP
Premier Platinum900 PQP
Premier 1K1,400 PQP

Deposits are based on the Premier status held as of 31 December 2025. These “Head Start” points are automatically credited to accounts to assist with 2026 status re-qualification. Importantly, they do not count towards lifetime Million Miler progress.

Premier Silver (15 PQF and 5,000 PQP, or 6,000 PQP)

Silver is the entry Premier tier. Core benefits include the Premier Silver earning rate detailed in the rate tables above, one complimentary checked bag (up to 70 lbs/32 kg) for the member and companions on the same reservation, complimentary Economy Plus seat access at check-in (subject to availability), complimentary Premier Upgrades on eligible domestic and short-haul international routes when space is available, and priority check-in, security, and boarding. Star Alliance Silver status activates at this tier, delivering priority benefits across all 28 or more Star Alliance member airlines. From 14 May 2026, Premier Silver members also board JetBlue’s Group 3 under the Blue Sky reciprocal benefits.

Importantly, from 1 February 2026, Silver members are also eligible for complimentary Premier Upgrades. Specifically, this applies when travelling on an award ticket booked with MileagePlus miles. Notably, previously, upgrades on award bookings were not available to Silver members.

Premier Gold (30 PQF and 10,000 PQP, or 12,000 PQP)

Gold delivers the programme’s most operationally significant upgrade over Silver: Star Alliance Gold status. Specifically, this grants complimentary access to Star Alliance member airline lounges worldwide when travelling on a qualifying international itinerary. At London Heathrow Terminal 2B, Gold members access the United Club and any other Star Alliance lounge in the satellite terminal, with one guest. Notably, this includes the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge and the Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge. Two complimentary checked bags apply. Additionally, Economy Plus seat access extends to booking time for the member plus one companion. From 14 May 2026, Premier Gold members board JetBlue’s Group 2 under Blue Sky.

Premier Platinum (45 PQF and 15,000 PQP, or 18,000 PQP)

Platinum activates the programme’s premium currency: PlusPoints. Importantly, members receive 40 PlusPoints upon reaching Platinum status. PlusPoints fund confirmed cabin upgrades, including Polaris Business Class on long-haul routes. Additionally, they can also be redeemed for bonus miles, TravelBank cash, gifting Premier status to other members, or converting to additional PQP or PQF. Three complimentary checked bags apply. Economy Plus seat access at booking for the member and up to eight companions. Priority access to Polaris Saver award fares (lower miles cost on United’s Business Class) for both purchased and award ticket bookings. From 14 May 2026, Premier Platinum members board JetBlue’s Group 1 under Blue Sky.

PlusPoints and dynamic upgrades in 2027: United confirmed that from February 2027, PlusPoints upgrade pricing will shift to a dynamic model. The fixed chart (currently requiring, for example, a set number of PlusPoints to move from Economy to Polaris on a long-haul route) will be replaced by variable pricing based on demand, route, and date. Platinum members planning to use PlusPoints for confirmed upgrades should factor this change into their 2026 and 2027 strategy.

Premier 1K (60 PQF and 22,000 PQP, or 28,000 PQP)

1K is the programme’s highest published elite tier. Members earn additional PlusPoints at a rate of 20 PlusPoints for every 3,000 PQP earned beyond 22,000 PQP, with no cap. Consequently, this makes card spending increasingly valuable for upgrade-focused travellers at this level. A unique Skip Waitlist feature allows 1K members on select international routes to bypass the upgrade waitlist. Specifically, they commit additional PlusPoints, either at a reduced rate or to confirm a seat even when no upgrade space formally exists, with a minimum 30 days before departure. The United Global Services Lounge at London Heathrow T2B is a quieter, premium section adjacent to the main United Club. Notably, it serves as an overflow space for 1K members and exclusive access for Global Services invitees. From 14 May 2026, Premier 1K members board JetBlue’s Group 1 under Blue Sky, the same priority as Platinum.

Global Services: Above 1K

Global Services is United’s invitation-only tier. It is extended to members who contribute most significantly to United’s annual revenues, or who have accumulated four million lifetime miles with United. Importantly, benefits are not publicly listed in full. Specifically, they include access to dedicated agents, enhanced upgrade priority, and the Global Services section of the United Club at London Heathrow, among other bespoke services.

How to Redeem MileagePlus Miles

Award Flights: No Blackout Dates

Importantly, MileagePlus members can book any United-operated flight at any time using miles, with no blackout dates. Award pricing uses a dynamic model, varying by route, demand, date, and booking lead time, rather than a fixed published chart. The miles required for a given seat fluctuate as a result. Members who are Premier status holders or Chase United cardholders receive access to expanded Polaris Saver award availability. Specifically, this is a lower-miles pricing tier on Business Class seats, not visible to general members without status or a qualifying card. From 2 April 2026, eligible Cardmembers additionally receive at least 10% fewer miles required on standard award bookings, rising to 15% for Premier cardmembers. Notably, see the Cardmember Award Pricing section above for full detail.

Award tickets for flights originating in the United States and Canada are refundable, excluding Basic Economy awards. Specifically, miles redeposit and eligible taxes and fees return if plans change, allowing members to rebook if pricing drops after the initial booking.

Upgrades with PlusPoints

Importantly, Platinum and 1K members redeem PlusPoints for confirmed cabin upgrades on eligible United flights. Notably, PlusPoint upgrades can be requested at the time of booking and are processed before the flight. Additionally, from February 2026, PlusPoints are also valid on award ticket bookings. Consequently, this gives all Premier members the ability to upgrade a miles redemption to a higher cabin. Fixed upgrade chart pricing applies in 2026; dynamic pricing takes effect in February 2027.

Beyond Flights: Miles Plus Money, Wi-Fi and In-Flight

Members can part-pay any United booking through the Miles Plus Money option at united.com. Specifically, this applies a combination of miles and dollars to reduce the cash cost. Minimum 5,000 miles applies. Importantly, note that the new Cardmember award pricing discount does not apply to Miles Plus Money bookings.

Additionally, miles also redeem for in-flight extras on United-operated flights. Specifically, these include onboard Wi-Fi passes, snack and beverage purchases, and seat upgrades at the airport or gate. Notably, these lower-value redemptions suit members who want to maintain an active account. Furthermore, they also extract partial value from a smaller balance without a full award booking.

Star Alliance Partner Awards

MileagePlus miles redeem on flights with 28 or more Star Alliance member airlines, covering routes that United itself does not serve. For UK members, this includes intra-European routes on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, and LOT Polish Airlines. Furthermore, long-haul coverage extends to East Asia (ANA, Asiana, EVA Air, Singapore Airlines) and the Middle East and Africa (EgyptAir, Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airways). Notably, partner award pricing varies by airline and route.

Redeeming Miles on JetBlue via Blue Sky

MileagePlus members can also book JetBlue-operated flights directly through united.com, using either cash or miles. Importantly, this follows the Blue Sky partnership’s earlier 2025 phase. Earning on JetBlue flights starts at 5 miles per $1, broadly comparable to United’s own pre-April rate. Additionally, Premier members earn bonus rates on top of that base. Honest Warning: a small number of JetBlue routes from Newark to Cancun, Aruba, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Punta Cana are excluded from MileagePlus earning entirely. Furthermore, JetBlue flights never count toward PQF or PQP regardless of route.

MileagePlus Credit Cards and PQP Earning

Chase United credit cards issued in the US market provide three MileagePlus benefits beyond miles earning: PQP accumulation through card spending (reducing the flying requirement for status), annual United Club passes on select cards, and free first checked bags for the cardholder and companions on the same reservation.

PQP earning rates through US-issued Chase United cards:

Credit Card PQP Earning

Premier Qualifying Points Accrual Rates & Annual Caps

CardPQP Earning RateAnnual PQP Cap
United Club Infinite Card1 PQP per $15 spentNo published cap
United Explorer, Quest, and Business Cards1 PQP per $20 spent1,000 PQP per year
United Gateway CardNo PQP earned on card spendNot applicable

PQP earning rates verified for the 2026 qualification year. Importantly, PQP earned through card spend counts toward all Premier status levels up to Premier 1K. Notably, only primary cardholders are eligible to earn PQP on spend.

From 1 January 2026, PQP earned through eligible United credit card spending by Premier 1K members counts toward earning additional PlusPoints. Importantly, no cap applies to how many PlusPoints can be accumulated via this channel. Consequently, this makes card spending increasingly valuable for 1K members focused on securing confirmed upgrade certificates.

United Airlines Partners

The Star Alliance network spans 28 or more airlines. Notably, it gives MileagePlus members mile earning and lounge access across one of the widest route networks in global aviation. In addition to the core Star Alliance partners, United maintains bilateral earning agreements with select non-alliance airlines. Specifically, this includes the JetBlue Blue Sky partnership detailed in the 2026 Update Alert above. Notably, the full list of MileagePlus airline and non-airline partners is maintained at united.com/mileageplus/partners.

Notably, UK-specific partner highlights include car hire with Hertz at UK airports. Hotel earning through Marriott and IHG properties across the UK and Europe, plus Uber earning on eligible rides in the UK and internationally, round out the list.

Status Match and Status Challenge

Members of other airline elite programmes can apply for a MileagePlus Premier Status Match through United’s formal status match programme at promo.united.com. Importantly, accepted applicants receive a 120-day window to meet a reduced qualifying threshold and retain the matched status. Notably, status match applications require documentary evidence of current elite status from another programme, valid through the challenge period. Importantly, the matched status is provisional until the qualifying threshold is met.

Border and Safety: What UK Travellers Need to Know in 2026

London Heathrow Terminal 2 to the United States

All United flights from London Heathrow Terminal 2 to the United States are transatlantic routes requiring US entry authorisation. Importantly, UK passport holders must hold a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) before departure for most visit purposes. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. The cost is $21 USD. Notably, ESTA processing is usually immediate but can take up to 72 hours. Apply well before travel.

Importantly, US Customs and Border Protection processes all international arrivals at the first US port of entry. Consequently, members connecting onward within the US collect and re-check baggage at the first airport before proceeding to their domestic connection.

EES and Star Alliance Partner Routes via the EU

UK members redeeming MileagePlus miles on Star Alliance partner flights routing through Schengen Area airports will encounter the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) at the Schengen border entry point. Specifically, this applies via Lufthansa through Frankfurt, SWISS through Zurich, or Austrian Airlines through Vienna. Notably, EES reached full operational activation on 10 April 2026. Specifically, it requires mandatory biometric registration — facial scan and fingerprints — for all non-EU nationals on their first Schengen entry. Importantly, build a minimum 45 to 60 minutes beyond the published minimum connection time at any EU hub during the initial EES rollout period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Joining and Programme Basics

How do I join MileagePlus? Membership is free. Register at united.com or through the United app. Your account activates immediately. Add your MileagePlus number to any upcoming booking via the United website or app to start earning from your next flight. Miles earned within three months of joining may be claimed retroactively for past United flights.

Do MileagePlus miles expire? No. MileagePlus miles never expire under any circumstances, with no activity requirement to sustain them.

How does Mileage Pooling work? Members can pool miles with up to five family members or friends at no charge through the Mileage Pooling feature at united.com. Any contributor can deposit miles and any group member can redeem from the shared balance. There is no minimum balance requirement to join a pool.

Earning Rates and the April 2026 Changes

What changed with MileagePlus earning rates on 2 April 2026? United switched from a distance-based earning model to one based on the eligible fare amount, Premier status, and United card ownership. Three rate tiers now exist: the MileagePlus rate (no card), the Cardmember rate (holding an eligible card), and the Pay-with-card rate (paying with that specific card). General members without a card now earn zero miles on Basic Economy fares, a significant change from the previous reduced-rate approach.

Do I need a United credit card to earn miles now? Not for standard fares — general members without a card still earn 3 miles per $1 on regular Economy fares. However, for Basic Economy specifically, a United card is now required for general members to earn any miles at all. Premier status holders continue to earn on Basic Economy without a card, though at a reduced rate compared with standard fares.

What is the new Cardmember award pricing discount? From 2 April 2026, eligible United Cardmembers receive at least 10% fewer miles required on standard United and United Express award bookings, rising to at least 15% for Premier members holding an eligible card. This does not apply to Miles Plus Money bookings, and taxes and fees remain payable in cash.

Status and Qualification

What is PQP? Premier Qualifying Points represent eligible dollar spending on United flights (and qualifying card spending for eligible Chase United cardholders). One PQP equals one dollar of eligible spend. PQP reset to zero on 1 January each year.

What is PQF? Premier Qualifying Flights count the number of actual flights taken on United or United Express-operated services during the qualifying year. Basic Economy flights earn PQF but not PQP. Award flights do not earn PQF.

Can I qualify for Premier status through credit card spending alone? Partially. Card spending on eligible Chase United cards generates PQP that counts toward Silver, Gold, and Platinum thresholds (subject to annual caps). For 1K, cardholders must also meet the 60 PQF flight requirement. All members using the PQP-only qualification route must still complete at least four United or United Express flights during the qualification year.

What are PlusPoints? PlusPoints are a separate upgrade currency exclusive to Premier Platinum and Premier 1K members. Platinum members receive 40 PlusPoints on reaching status. 1K members receive 280 on reaching status and earn additional PlusPoints from PQP milestones above 22,000. PlusPoints fund confirmed cabin upgrades, and can also be redeemed for bonus miles, TravelBank cash, status gifting, or converted to PQP or PQF. Dynamic PlusPoints pricing for upgrades takes effect from February 2027.

JetBlue Blue Sky Partnership

What is the United–JetBlue Blue Sky partnership? Blue Sky is a reciprocal loyalty partnership between United and JetBlue. Members can earn and redeem miles or points across both airlines, and as of 14 May 2026, Premier and Mosaic elite members receive reciprocal benefits including priority boarding, free checked bags, complimentary extra-legroom seating, and priority check-in when flying the partner airline.

Do JetBlue flights count toward United Premier status? No. JetBlue-operated flights do not earn Premier Qualifying Points or Premier Qualifying Flights, regardless of which loyalty number is credited to the booking. Members can earn standard MileagePlus miles on eligible JetBlue fares, but these flights will never contribute to Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K qualification.

Can I access United Club lounges when flying JetBlue, or vice versa? No. The Blue Sky partnership does not currently include reciprocal lounge access. United Club access remains exclusive to United’s own qualifying passengers and Premier members, and JetBlue’s own lounges remain exclusive to JetBlue’s elite members and premium passengers.

Earning and Spending Miles

Can I earn MileagePlus miles on Basic Economy tickets? From 2 April 2026, general members without a United card earn zero miles on Basic Economy fares. Premier members and United Cardmembers continue to earn on Basic Economy, though at reduced rates compared with standard fares. Basic Economy fares also do not earn PQP toward Premier status qualification, are not eligible for complimentary upgrades or Economy Plus seating, and cannot be changed or cancelled without a fee, regardless of Premier tier.

What is the Polaris Saver Award? Polaris Saver Awards are discounted Business Class award seats on United-operated long-haul flights, offering a lower miles price than standard award pricing. Access to Polaris Saver inventory is available to Premier Silver, Premier Gold, Chase United cardholders, and above. The expanded availability makes Business Class redemptions more accessible for lower-tier elite members holding a qualifying card.

Can I use miles on Star Alliance partners? Yes. MileagePlus miles redeem on all 28 or more Star Alliance member airlines. Partner award pricing is set by MileagePlus and varies by airline, cabin class, and route. Search partner award availability at united.com.

The United App

Notably, the United app is the primary account management tool for MileagePlus members. Core functions include:

  • Real-time PQP and PQF tracking toward the current year’s Premier threshold
  • Award flight search with miles pricing across United, JetBlue, and Star Alliance partners
  • PlusPoints balance and redemption (Platinum and 1K only)
  • Mileage Pooling management
  • United Club day pass purchase ($59 per visit, payable in the app)
  • Digital boarding pass and mobile check-in
  • Upgrade waitlist status and notification
  • MileagePlus X access for everyday partner mile earning
  • Account summary showing current miles balance, tier, and year-to-date PQP and PQF

Members approaching the end of the qualification year can track their PQP and PQF positions in real time through the app’s status tracker, making it the most practical tool for planning final qualifying purchases or flights before 31 December.

Your Next Step: Track Status and Search Awards

Importantly, before booking any United flight, use the United miles calculator at united.com. Specifically, this calculates how many MileagePlus miles and PQP your specific booking will generate under the current rate structure effective 2 April 2026, based on your Premier tier and card status.

Importantly, for award searches, log into your MileagePlus account at united.com before searching. Premier members and eligible Chase United cardholders see expanded Polaris Saver award inventory and the new Cardmember award pricing discount. Notably, neither is visible to general members without status or a qualifying card.

Importantly, track your PQP and PQF progress and manage PlusPoints through the United app. Notably, it updates in real time after each qualifying flight.
