Skywards has more than 37 million members worldwide, yet two facts about the programme catch even experienced members off guard. First: a Classic Reward ticket booked entirely with Skywards Miles earns zero Miles and zero Tier Miles back. Second: Emirates has no airline alliance membership whatsoever. Every lounge, tier privilege, award seat, and benefit in this guide is an Emirates product built exclusively around the airline’s own network of 140 weekly flights across eight UK gateways. For Londoners, that means six daily Airbus A380 departures from Heathrow Terminal 3 alone, with onward connections through Dubai International Airport to destinations across Africa, South Asia, South-East Asia, Australia, and the Americas. That concentration of departures makes Skywards one of the most accessible premium frequent flyer programmes available to UK members, provided they understand the two rules that govern how Miles work.

Quick Answer: What is Emirates Skywards? Emirates Skywards is a free-to-join loyalty programme with four membership tiers: Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Members earn two separate currencies: Skywards Miles (for redemptions) and Tier Miles (for status). Tier reviews happen on a rolling 12-month basis, not on a fixed calendar year. Standard Skywards Miles are valid for three years from the date of travel. Platinum members hold an important exception: their Miles do not expire for as long as they retain Platinum status. Departures from London Heathrow use Terminal 3 (LHR T3), where the Emirates Lounge is accessible to Gold and Platinum members alongside First and Business Class passengers.

Joining Emirates Skywards

Registration at emirates.com is free and takes approximately two minutes. New members receive a Blue membership number immediately on joining; add it to an upcoming booking through the Manage a Booking function to claim Miles on your first trip. Membership is purely digital: Emirates removed physical membership cards from the programme. Members access their digital card through the Emirates App, save it to Apple Wallet, or download it to a device’s photo library. Emirates requires no physical card at any airport touchpoint, which suits travellers who prefer a digital-only wallet.

Members who join with an Emirates Skywards co-branded Mastercard (where available) can earn up to 70,000 bonus Miles on approval and may receive Gold or Silver tier membership for one year, subject to card terms. The Skywards Mastercard also earns Tier Miles on eligible card spending, accelerating status progression beyond flying alone. Note that the Tier Miles benefit on card spending is currently available for select co-branded cards in the USA; verify current UK card eligibility at emirates.com.

Departing from the UK: Eight Gateways, One Hub

London Heathrow Terminal 3

Emirates operates exclusively from London Heathrow Terminal 3 (LHR T3). The flagship LHR to Dubai International Airport (DXB) service runs six times daily on the Airbus A380 in a four-class configuration: First Class (private suites with Shower Spa access on the A380), Business Class (fully lie-flat seats), Premium Economy Class, and Economy Class. The A380 also features an Onboard Lounge on the upper deck, accessible to First and Business Class passengers during flight.

Emirates Lounge at LHR T3: First and Business Class passengers, along with Skywards Gold and Platinum members, hold exclusive access to the Emirates Lounge at Terminal 3. Silver and Blue members travelling in Economy do not access this lounge. The practical implication: for UK members who fly Emirates primarily in Economy, reaching Gold tier (50,000 Tier Miles) is the threshold that grants lounge access at their home departure airport.

London Gatwick (New Fourth Daily Flight from 8 February 2026)

Emirates introduced a fourth daily service between Dubai and London Gatwick from 8 February 2026, operated by the airline’s newest aircraft: the Airbus A350-900. The new EK069/070 service carries 32 lie-flat Business Class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 238 Economy Class seats. The A350 introduces wireless charging in Business Class, electric window blinds, and digital inflight menus on ice screens to the Gatwick route.

Eight UK Gateways at 140 Weekly Flights

By February 2026, Emirates reached 140 weekly flights across its eight UK gateways: London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. A mix of Airbus A380s, Airbus A350s, and Boeing 777-300ERs operates across these routes. Edinburgh and Gatwick now receive Emirates’ newest A350 aircraft. Verify aircraft type and schedule for your specific route at emirates.com before booking, as configurations vary.

Two Currencies, One Account: Skywards Miles vs Tier Miles

Emirates Skywards runs two parallel point systems. Mixing them up is the most expensive mistake a new member makes, because each currency earns differently, expires differently, and is never interchangeable.

Skywards Miles fund rewards: Classic Reward flights, upgrades, Cash+Miles part-payments, hotel stays, Skywards Exclusives events, and partner spending. Standard Skywards Miles expire three years from the date of travel. Platinum members carry an important rule: their Skywards Miles do not expire for as long as they hold Platinum status. When a Platinum member downgrades, any Miles extended under the Platinum rule expire at three months after their next tier review date.

Tier Miles track status only. They determine whether a member moves from Blue to Silver, Silver to Gold, or Gold to Platinum. Tier Miles play no role in funding any reward. They do not transfer to family accounts, cannot be purchased, and cannot be extended or reinstated. Earning more Skywards Miles through hotels or retail partners does not move Tier Miles. Status can only advance through flying with Emirates or flydubai, or through eligible co-branded card spending on select products.

Brutal Truth (1): Classic Rewards earn nothing back. A flight booked entirely as a Classic Reward (paid for exclusively with Skywards Miles) earns zero Skywards Miles and zero Tier Miles on the journey itself. Only Cash+Miles tickets (part-cash, part-Miles combinations) retain full earning eligibility on the cash portion. Members mid-tier should factor this into their redemption strategy: a Classic Reward redemption contributes nothing to Silver, Gold, or Platinum progression.

Tier Assessment: Rolling Review, Not a Fixed Year

Every programme in this guide operates an annual status year with a fixed 1 January or 1 April reset. Emirates does neither. Tier reviews occur on a rolling 12-month basis, assessed every time new Tier Miles post to a member’s account. There is no shared tier year: each member’s 12-month window runs from the date they achieved their current tier.

An example: a member who reaches Silver on 15 October 2026 has a tier review date of 31 October 2027. They retain Silver benefits through the end of October 2027, and Emirates assesses whether they have earned 25,000 Tier Miles in the preceding 12 months at that point. Tier reviews always take place at the end of the relevant month, not on the exact anniversary date.

This rolling model carries an important strategic implication: there is no end-of-year rush to hit a threshold before a fixed deadline. Members can earn status at any time of year. It also means status milestones activate immediately on qualification rather than at the start of the next programme year.

Membership Tiers and Benefits

Blue: The Starting Point

Every new member begins at Blue. The Blue tier earns Skywards Miles on all fare types (a genuine differentiator: Emirates states it is one of the few frequent flyer programmes offering reward miles on all fares). Blue members can spend Skywards Miles on instant upgrades at the check-in desk or on board, access waitlist priority, and benefit from complimentary unlimited messaging when travelling in Premium Economy or Economy Class, plus free Wi-Fi when in First or Business Class.

No Tier Miles bonus for being Blue. Emirates calculates Tier Miles purely on route distance, fare type, and cabin class, not on membership tier level. Moving to Silver, Gold or Platinum does not increase the rate at which Tier Miles accrue per flight.

Silver: 25,000 Tier Miles

Silver activates a 30% bonus on Skywards Miles earned on Emirates and flydubai flights (over and above the base miles for that route, fare and class). Practical benefits at Silver also include complimentary Emirates Business Class lounge access in Dubai for the member (not guests), priority boarding on all Emirates-operated flights at all airports except where the aircraft is parked remotely, and two personalised luggage tags per tier cycle, printed at Dubai Airport Business Class lounges. Silver tier review occurs at the end of the calendar month in which the 12-month window closes.

Gold: 50,000 Tier Miles

Gold raises the Skywards Miles bonus to 75% on Emirates and flydubai flights. The practical upgrade over Silver at Gold is substantial: complimentary Economy Class seat selection for the member and passengers in the same booking, complimentary Business Class lounge access in Dubai for the member and guests (within the complimentary guest entitlement), and the seat guarantee: Gold and Platinum members can secure a confirmed Economy Class seat on an Emirates flight even when the cabin shows full, without already holding a ticket. This benefit confirms availability rather than placing the member on a waitlist.

At London Heathrow Terminal 3, Gold status activates access to the Emirates Lounge for the member and one guest travelling on the same Emirates flight.

Platinum: 150,000 Tier Miles + One First or Business Class Flight

Platinum carries both a Tier Miles threshold and a qualifying cabin requirement: 150,000 Tier Miles within the rolling 12-month assessment period, plus at least one qualifying flight in First Class or Business Class during that period. This dual requirement means heavy Economy Class flyers who accumulate Tier Miles cannot reach Platinum through Economy flying alone, regardless of their total.

Platinum benefits include a 100% bonus on Skywards Miles earned on Emirates and flydubai flights, complimentary lounge access for the member and guests at all Emirates First and Business Class lounges in Dubai and worldwide, complimentary First Class check-in at the airport, complimentary baggage delivery, and Home Check-in in Dubai via third-party DUBZ (subject to conditions; not available on full-Miles tickets or direct flights to the USA or Tel Aviv).

Uniquely, Platinum members may nominate one other Emirates Skywards member for a complimentary Gold Partner card, valid for as long as the nominating member retains Platinum status. Platinum members can also redeem Skywards Miles for Business Class or Economy Flex Plus Classic Reward tickets on high-demand flights with normally restricted award availability, a benefit unavailable at lower tiers.

Brutal Truth (2): On-board instant upgrades do not give lounge access or extra baggage. Any member can purchase an instant upgrade with Skywards Miles at the check-in desk or on board the aircraft. But the benefits differ by timing. An upgrade purchased at the check-in desk carries full benefits: the member enjoys their upgraded cabin’s lounge access and baggage allowance. An upgrade purchased on board means the departure gate has already been passed, so lounge access does not activate and the checked baggage allowance does not change. The seat changes; the ground benefits do not. Members targeting a lounge visit in Dubai should request the upgrade at check-in, not mid-flight.

How to Earn Skywards Miles

Flying with Emirates and flydubai

Skywards Miles accrue on every Emirates and flydubai flight, in every cabin, on every fare type including Special and Saver fares. The number of Miles earned per flight depends on route distance, cabin class, and fare type. Flex and Flex Plus fares earn more Skywards Miles and Tier Miles than Saver or Special fares on the same route. Emirates publishes fare type options in Economy (Special, Saver, Flex, Flex Plus), Business Class (Flex, Flex Plus), Premium Economy (Flex Plus only), and First Class (Flex, Flex Plus). Members must decide which programme to credit the flight to at the time of reservation or check-in; the membership number cannot be changed after check-in for the first segment.

Earning Benchmark: A return Economy Class Flex fare from London Heathrow (LHR) to Dubai International Airport (DXB) earns approximately 2,500 to 3,500 Skywards Miles and around 2,000 to 2,800 Tier Miles at Blue level, depending on the specific fare class and route distance applied. A return Business Class Flex Plus fare on the same route earns substantially more, with Tier Miles in the range of 10,000 to 14,000 and Skywards Miles at a correspondingly higher rate. Use the Miles Calculator at emirates.com to generate exact figures for any route, fare type, and cabin class before booking.

Airline Partners and Codeshare Flights

Members earn Skywards Miles on flights with Emirates’ partner airlines. When flying on the joint Emirates-Qantas network, members continue to receive Emirates Skywards tier privileges on flights coded with an Emirates (EK) flight number. Tier Miles accrue only on Emirates-marketed (EK code) sectors; Qantas-operated segments earn Skywards Miles but not Tier Miles. Members must enter their Emirates Skywards membership number at the time of booking, not retrospectively.

Hotel and Ground Partners

The Emirates partner network spans hotels, car rental companies, retail brands, and lifestyle services. Key confirmed earning rates from the official Emirates partners page include: Marriott Bonvoy (earn on both flights and stays simultaneously with the Earn Twice feature; convert 3 Marriott Bonvoy points to 1 Skywards Mile; convert 3 Skywards Miles to 2 Marriott Bonvoy points); and IHG One Rewards (earn 2 Skywards Miles for every USD 1 spent at eligible IHG properties; convert 10,000 IHG One Rewards points to 2,000 Skywards Miles). Find additional hotel, car hire, and retail partners at emirates.com/skywards/partners.

Skywards Everyday (UAE)

Skywards Everyday is Emirates’ dedicated everyday spending app for UAE residents and visitors, allowing members to earn and spend Skywards Miles at more than 500 partner brands in the UAE across dining, shopping, beauty and wellness, groceries, and services. Participating brands confirmed on the Emirates media centre include Costa Coffee, Swarovski, NARS, Lacoste, Cole Haan, Tory Burch, and BinSina Pharmacy, among others. Earning rates: 1 Mile per AED 3 spent on most categories; 1 Mile per AED 5 spent on groceries and pharmacy purchases. From February 2026, Emirates launched a cashback conversion feature within Skywards Everyday: members can convert Skywards Miles directly to cashback at partner locations (500 Miles = AED 10 cashback). Skywards Miles earned through Skywards Everyday pool into a My Family account and sit under standard Skywards Programme Rules.

My Family: Pool Miles Across Up to Eight Members

Emirates Skywards My Family allows up to eight members (including the Family Head) to pool Skywards Miles into a shared account for faster reward accumulation. The Family Head must be an Emirates Skywards member aged 18 or above. Immediate family members eligible to join include spouses, domestic partners, children, step-children, parents, step-parents, parents-in-law, siblings, grandchildren, and domestic helpers. Members not already registered for Emirates Skywards must join before they can be added.

How contribution works: Each member chooses between contributing 0% or 100% of their Skywards Miles into the My Family account. This is a binary choice per earning category: either all Miles earned on Emirates and flydubai flights, partner airlines, and most ground partners flow into the family pool, or none do. Only Miles earned through financial conversion partners (credit card points transfers) cannot be pooled. Members adjust their contribution percentage at any time.

Brutal Truth (3): Tier Miles never pool. My Family shares Skywards Miles only. Tier Miles always remain individual, regardless of contribution settings. A parent contributing 100% of their Skywards Miles to the family pool retains every Tier Mile they earn personally, and none of their Tier Miles transfer to their children or partner. Status advancement is always individual. The Skywards Miles in the My Family account also expire based on the birthday month of the individual member who contributed them, not on the date of earning. Members should check the My Family dashboard regularly to identify Miles approaching expiry.

What My Family Miles can fund: Classic Reward flights, Cash+Miles bookings, Instant Upgrades at check-in, selected retail and lifestyle partners as offered by Emirates and partners, donations to the Emirates Airline Foundation, and Skywards Exclusives events. Purchased or gifted Miles cannot be pooled into My Family.

Spending Skywards Miles

Classic Reward Flights

Classic Rewards allow members to book flights to any Emirates or flydubai destination in any cabin class, paying entirely with Skywards Miles. Simply select Classic Rewards when booking at emirates.com. No blackout dates apply; availability is subject to award seat inventory. Platinum members additionally access high-demand flights with otherwise restricted Classic Reward availability for Business Class and Economy Flex Plus bookings, a benefit not available at lower tiers.

Cash+Miles

The Cash+Miles option applies Skywards Miles toward an Emirates or flydubai ticket to reduce the cash component, with the remaining balance paid by card. Members who log in before searching flights see exclusive Cash+Miles rates. This option preserves full mile and Tier Mile earning on the cash-paid portion of the ticket, making it preferable to Classic Rewards for members also working toward a tier threshold.

Upgrades

Members spend Skywards Miles to upgrade from Economy to Premium Economy, Economy to Business Class, Premium Economy to Business Class, or Business Class to First Class, subject to seat and catering availability. Members request upgrades through Manage a Booking online before departure, at the check-in desk, or on board. Economy Class Saver tickets and Business Class Saver fare tickets can only be upgraded at online check-in, at the airport, or on board. Special fare tickets cannot be upgraded under any circumstances.

Skywards Exclusives

Skywards Exclusives covers money-can’t-buy events and experiences: live sporting events, concerts, culinary experiences, and cultural occasions. Members spend Miles on event tickets or participate in Miles-based auctions for premium hospitality. The Skywards Exclusives catalogue is available at the dedicated Skywards Exclusives page on emirates.com.

Do More With Your Miles

Emirates offers four tools for managing a Skywards Miles balance beyond standard earning.

Buy Miles: Members purchase additional Skywards Miles at USD 30 per 1,000 Miles when they fall short of a reward threshold. Gold and Platinum members may buy up to 200,000 Miles in a calendar year; Silver and Blue members up to 100,000 Miles. Minimum purchase: 2,000 Miles per transaction. The purchasing account must have at least one Emirates flight or partner earning activity before purchasing is permitted.

Gift Miles: Members gift Skywards Miles to another member at USD 30 per 1,000 Miles. The same annual limits apply as Buy Miles, based on the recipient’s tier. Gifted Miles cannot be pooled into My Family accounts.

Extend Miles: Members extend Skywards Miles expiring within the next three months for an additional 12 months at USD 20 per 1,000 Miles. The 50,000 annual cap covers both Extend Miles and Reinstate Miles combined. Miles pooled into My Family cannot be extended through this product.

Reinstate Miles: Members reinstate expired Skywards Miles within 180 days of expiry for an additional 12 months, at USD 20 per 1,000 Miles, subject to the same 50,000 annual cap.

Skywards+ Paid Subscription

Skywards+ is a voluntary paid subscription that adds benefits on top of a member’s existing tier, available to all four tiers. Emirates offers three packages (prices as published at launch; verify current pricing at emirates.com/skywards before subscribing as rates may have been updated):

Skywards+ Subscription Packages

Premium Benefits for Solo Travellers & Frequent Flyers

Package Annual Cost Key Benefits
Classic USD 399 20% bonus Skywards Miles; Business Class lounge access twice per year; 5 kg extra baggage allowance.
Advanced USD 699 20% discount on upgrade rewards; 10 kg extra baggage or 1 additional piece; Business Class lounge access five times per year.
Premium USD 999 20% more Tier Miles during subscription; 20% discount on upgrade rewards; unlimited Business Class lounge access.
*Subscription costs and benefits verified for the 2026 travel season. Skywards+ benefits are personal to the subscriber and cannot be shared with guests. Lounge access is restricted to Emirates Business Class lounges.

The Premium package increases Tier Miles earned during the subscription period by 20%, making it relevant for members within range of a tier threshold who want to accelerate qualification without additional flying.

The Emirates App

The Emirates App is the primary account management tool for Skywards members, covering booking management, online check-in, flight status, and full Skywards account access. Core Skywards functions in the app include:

  • Digital membership card: accessible via the app at all times, saveable to Apple Wallet
  • Miles balance and expiry dates: live account summary showing Skywards Miles, Tier Miles, and expiry dates
  • My Family account management: contribution settings, family balance, and redemption requests
  • Miles Calculator: route-by-route estimate of Miles earned for a specific fare, cabin, and destination
  • Upgrade requests: submit upgrade requests through Manage a Booking within the app
  • Skywards Everyday: accessible separately through the dedicated Skywards Everyday app (iOS and Android), linked to the Emirates Skywards account

Members can add their digital card to Apple Wallet directly from the app. Emirates requires no physical membership card at any touchpoint in the programme.

Border and Travel: What UK Travellers Need to Know in 2026

London Heathrow Terminal 3 to Dubai

Emirates flights from LHR T3 route directly to Dubai International Airport (DXB), the UAE’s main hub. UK passport holders entering the UAE receive a visa-on-arrival for visits of up to 30 days at no charge, granted on arrival at Dubai International Airport. No advance visa registration or biometric pre-screening applies on this direct routing. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which reached full operational activation on 10 April 2026, does not apply on the London Heathrow to Dubai direct route.

EES on Connecting Itineraries via Europe

UK members redeeming Skywards Miles on partner airline itineraries that route through a Schengen Area airport (such as a connecting flight via Frankfurt Airport, Zurich Airport, or Vienna International Airport) will encounter EES at the Schengen border entry point. Any such connection requires a minimum additional 45 to 60 minutes beyond the published minimum connection time for first-time EES biometric registration (facial scan and fingerprints). EES does not apply on direct LHR to DXB Emirates services or on routes from other UK gateways to Dubai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Joining and Programme Basics

How do I join Emirates Skywards? Registration is free at emirates.com or through the Emirates App. The account activates immediately. Add your membership number to an upcoming booking via Manage a Booking to start earning on your next Emirates or flydubai flight. Emirates does not issue physical membership cards; your digital card is available in the app from the moment of registration.

Does Emirates Skywards belong to a frequent flyer alliance? No. Emirates is not a member of Star Alliance, oneworld, or SkyTeam. Emirates Skywards is entirely independent. Emirates administers all tier benefits, lounge access, and award redemptions directly, with no third-party alliance network involved. There are no alliance-wide lounge benefits at Gold tier from third-party carrier networks.

How long are Skywards Miles valid? Standard Skywards Miles expire three years from the date of travel. For My Family accounts, each Miles batch carries an expiry linked to the birthday month of the individual member who contributed them. Platinum members hold an exception: their Skywards Miles do not expire for as long as they retain Platinum status.

Tiers and Status

How is my tier assessed? Emirates assesses tier status every time new Tier Miles post to a member’s account. The assessment covers the most recent 12 calendar months. Emirates shares no common programme year across its membership. Each member’s review period starts from the date they achieved their current tier. Tier reviews always take place at the end of a calendar month.

Can I reach Platinum through Economy Class flying alone? No. Platinum requires 150,000 Tier Miles in the rolling 12-month period and at least one qualifying flight in First Class or Business Class within the same period. Economy-only travel, regardless of volume or fare type, cannot satisfy the Platinum cabin requirement.

What does the Platinum Gold Partner card offer? A Platinum member may nominate one Emirates Skywards member (spouse, family member, colleague, or friend) for a complimentary Gold membership. The Gold Partner retains Gold status for as long as the nominating member holds Platinum. If the Platinum member downgrades, the Gold Partner keeps Gold status until their next tier review date.

Earning and Spending Miles

Do all fares earn Skywards Miles? Yes, on Emirates and flydubai flights. Emirates confirms it is one of the few frequent flyer programmes offering reward miles on all fare types, including Special and Saver fares. However, Classic Reward tickets (booked entirely with Skywards Miles) do not earn Skywards Miles or Tier Miles. Cash+Miles tickets, where a cash component is present, do earn Miles on the cash portion.

What is the difference between Cash+Miles and Classic Rewards? Classic Rewards covers the full ticket price in Skywards Miles only. Cash+Miles allows part-payment in Miles with the remainder in cash, reducing the number of Miles required and preserving earning eligibility on the cash portion. Members targeting a tier threshold should consider Cash+Miles over Classic Rewards where possible, since Cash+Miles flights earn Tier Miles.

Can I pool all my Miles into My Family? Members choose to contribute either 0% or 100% of Skywards Miles earned on flights and most partner activities to My Family. Partial percentages are not available for flight miles. Miles earned through financial conversion partners (such as credit card points transfers) cannot be pooled. Purchased or gifted Miles are also ineligible for pooling.

Your Next Step

Before booking any Emirates flight, use the Miles Calculator at emirates.com to confirm exactly how many Skywards Miles and Tier Miles your specific route, cabin, and fare type will generate. Log in to your Emirates Skywards account before searching for award availability, particularly for Cash+Miles rates, which display at exclusive member pricing only when you are signed in.

For members within range of a tier threshold, check whether your current rolling 12-month window closes before or after your next planned flight. Unlike programmes that reset all members on the same date, Emirates assesses each account individually: your window and your opportunity are personal to you.

Emirates Skywards membership is free to join. Programme benefits, tier thresholds, Miles earning and expiry rules, partner terms, and Skywards+ subscription pricing are subject to change. Emirates publishes current programme rules at emirates.com/skywards/programme-rules. Always verify current terms, lounge access conditions, and award availability at emirates.com or in the Emirates App before making booking or status decisions.
