Air New Zealand is introducing a new feature for long-haul economy travel. It will let passengers book dedicated sleep pods during flights.

The product is called Economy Skynest. It goes on sale from 18 May 2026. The airline will first use it on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft starting in November 2026.

Sleep pods inside the economy cabin

Skynest creates a separate rest space inside the aircraft. The airline installs six pods in a stacked layout. It places them between Economy and Premium Economy cabins.

Each pod gives passengers a flat sleeping surface. It includes a mattress, bedding, lighting, ventilation, and charging ports. A privacy curtain separates each pod. Passengers also receive a small amenity kit with basics like socks, an eye mask, earplugs, and skincare items.

How booking works

Passengers can book a pod for a four-hour session. The airline designed the timing around typical sleep cycles.

Air New Zealand will offer two sessions per flight at launch. Each passenger returns to their seat after their time ends. The airline prices each session from NZD $495. Customers add it on top of an Economy or Premium Economy fare.

The airline limits access to passengers aged 15 and over.

Rollout timeline

Bookings open on 18 May 2026. Flights with Skynest start in November 2026.

The airline will roll out the product on selected long-haul routes first. These include services between New Zealand and major international hubs such as North America.

Why the airline is introducing Skynest

Air New Zealand developed Skynest over several years. It tested the concept with more than 200 customers.

The airline wants to improve comfort on ultra-long-haul journeys. Many flights to and from New Zealand involve very long travel times. Passengers often spend more than a day in transit when connections are included.

Skynest builds on earlier innovation like the Skycouch. That product allowed economy passengers to turn a row of seats into a flat space.

What passengers should expect

Availability will stay limited. Only a small number of pods exist on each flight.

Passengers will need to book early, especially on popular routes. Demand may exceed supply once sales open.

The pods require some mobility to enter and exit because of their stacked design. They work best for passengers who want short, uninterrupted rest rather than a full sleep period.

Skynest creates a middle option between standard economy seating and business class beds. It gives passengers a chance to lie flat without upgrading cabins.
